Carolina flips the script: UNC shocks TCU, NDSU lands hard

North Carolina opened Year 2 under Bill Belichick with a 15-10 upset of TCU. The Tar Heels changed the subject in Dublin. North Dakota State made a louder first impression closer to home.

The lede

UNC lost this matchup 48-14 a year ago. This time, Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards Jr. threw for 232 yards and the Tar Heels left Ireland with a five-point win. TCU closed as a 7.5-point favorite, per CollegeFootballData. That made Carolina the first proper surprise of the FBS season.

Virginia supplied the first thumping. The Cavaliers beat NC State 34-8 in Charlottesville, turning an early ACC measuring stick into a one-sided afternoon.

The Observer's Call

North Dakota State delivered the weekend's clearest message. The Bison own 10 national titles, then opened FBS life with a 33-7 win over Jacksonville State. Promotion was supposed to test whether the machine traveled. It did on Day 1. One game can't settle a season, but it can kill the idea that NDSU needs years to belong.
